Running is for Everyone

A Beginner Runner Guide

It’s no secret that at Eclipse Running and Reno Running Company , we run. We love it! And we think you’ll love it too. Simple to start, easy to adjust and beneficial to your physical, emotional, and mental health.

You’ll find no requirement for a membership or fancy equipment; all you need is a good pair of shoes and the desire to get going. We know that as simple as running can be, stress, stigmas, and physical limitations can make the commitment to running a daunting journey. That’s where we can help!

Your First Steps

Let’s take this slow. Literally.

New runners frequently trap themselves by setting incredible goals on Day 1, and while we admire the enthusiasm, doing too much too soon can leave you feeling frustrated, discouraged, or even injured. Start Small. If you’re totally new to running begin with walking! If you’re comfortable walking for 30min or more, start by incorporating brief jogging intervals. When you’re ready, a specialized pair of running shoes can make or break your fledgling running career. Visit any of our stores and we will use slow motion analysis to make sure you have the perfect pair of shoes for your unique gait cycle!

A balanced running plan will incorporate long runs, short runs, strength training, speed drills, and ample amounts of rest and recovery work. If you’re not sure where to start, consider joining a running group. Bringing a social element to running often helps with commitment over time. Our weekend running groups are full of runners of all ages and paces, and are always excited to have a new runner at any stage! We meet at 8am on Saturdays at our Sparks and Eclipse stores and at 8am on Sundays at the Summit Mall Store.

Sticking With It

In addition to joining a running group or training program, there are multiple goals you can set to stay accountable in your running journey. We love the idea of signing up for a 5k! We recommend giving yourself at least 8 weeks to train up for it — a suitable length of time, but short enough to stay focused.

Be Kind To Yourself First

To truly love running, you need to let it love you back. This means respecting your limits, paying attention to injuries when they occur, and fueling the body with what it needs to move. If you’re experiencing pain during your runs, it’s vital that you proactively address those injuries upfront and see your recovery plans through.

Nutrition and hydration are also big factors in the overall comfort you’ll experience while running. Eat before and after your run and drink at least 120oz of water per day.

Utilize Your Resources

Support is all around you! At Reno Running Company/Eclipse we want to be the best resource we can to runners new and old. Shop our shoes for the best, comfortable running companion, and reach out to our team with any questions you have along the way.

Enjoy the run!
